Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major honors show draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
