During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a new era” and an audacious start to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
